Somerset Maugham managed to create a lot of fiction works, which depict various sides of human being with great artistic trustworthiness. The life of characters is involved in a magic circle of circumstances in them. And only on the edge of this circle they are given a twinkle of freedom. Just that very minute the hero of the story "The Fall of Edward Barnard" says: "I never knew I had a soul till I found it here."
The cover shows Nave nave moe. Sweet somnolence. 1894 by Paul Gauguin (Wonderful spring. The Hermitage).
